Alex Dukal - Brush 34 - AD-Washed-Ink

This set of brushes was created with the idea of emulating some styles used primarily in black and white comic strips, using black ink and washes, and I’ve added a lot of extra brushes that complement very well the set.

Please, take 10 minutes and watch this video (below) that includes a live preview of each brush stroke included in version 1.3 or if you prefer open the reference sheet for v1.4 (PDF 10 Mb.).

UPDATED TO V1.4 – December, 2016

This is the last update of the year and, again, there are changes to the main file:
three brushes from the ‘Comics’ section have been moved to the new ‘Fountain Pens’, so keep in mind that the numbering of some brushes has changed.
These new brushes (a total of 22) were specially created by a request from a user who was looking to emulate some traditional fountain pens: liquid black ink but including some subtle wash effect.
I’ve also added some more Ink Washings, a nice blender for washings and a new wash eraser. All the new brushes were added to the Reference Sheet and there’s a new video to preview these brushes in action:

To keep things organized the new set is provided separated from the main file, of course if you are interested to keep all the brushes in one file you could load the main set, then the fountain pen brushes and finally save it all together. This video tutorial could help:

My old ‘Cross Hatching’ brushes have been separated and expanded to a full set of 40 cross hatching brushes, this are special brushes to shade drawings, to enhance the details or to add value. I love this technique so… expect improvements.

Until today my ‘Splatter brushes’ were split, a few in a pack and another bunch in another pack. To avoid the repetition of brushes and to make easier the future upgrades I’ve gathered all in this new set, which includes some new impressive splatters.

An important TIP for my photoshop tool presets:

Alex Dukal Brushes Tip 1

Requirements

Most of this brushes & presets were created in Photoshop CC 2015 using a Wacom Intuos 4 Tablet.
Tested also in Photoshop CS6 with a Wacom Graphire 4 and a Cintiq Companion Hybrid.

RECOMMENDED SETUP: Photoshop Creative Cloud (CC to CC2017) plus a Wacom tablet.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: Photoshop CS5.5 + Wacom tablet, but… with this setup do not expect to use the brushes in the exactly same way I created them. Photoshop CS6 is fine for this brushes.

Take note that the Wacom Graphire and Bamboo models has less pressure levels and the absence of some options (Eg.: there’s no TILT option for brushes).

Hi Alex. Excuse my lack of Spanish – I love your brushes! I would like to make one request, if its possible of course. When I choose a colour using a brush I would like it to keep the colour when I choose another. At present, if I choose one of your brushes and a colour it changes to black if I choose another brush. It would be very useful to keep the colour between changing brushes. Don’t know if you can control this but thought I would ask. Many thanks.

    • Dukal says:

Hi Rob, don’t worry I’m still writing in my caveman english 😉
The black in this tool presets was a choice, a decision I take, as I said in the description (above):

“This pack was created with the idea of emulating some styles used primarily in black and white comic strips, using black ink and washes, but I’ve added some brushes that complement very well the set.”

Anyway I understand your request, and there are two options:
      1. To update all the set without the predefined Black colour
      2. You learn how to do it (sorry, it sound rude that way but it isn’t!). It’s really easy but it takes a little time and you need to be a little bit meticulous with the naming and saving the presets
For the first one, I’m not so convinced but I’ll think about it, it would be nice to hear more opinions (I’ll ask some colleagues abou it)
Thanks for the feedback Rob, I’m sure its a great way to improve our tools!

      • Rob Fitzgerald says:

Thanks for the reply and the email Alex. I understand how to make it work for me now. Thanks again!

Got these brushes the other day, and have been using them on my Surface Pro. They are hands down the most amazing photoshop brushes I have ever used. They actually emulate real media!! Thank you for making these!

    • Dukal says:

I’m glad you like them Rob!
A friend of mine that is also a SurfacePro user told me something similar a couple of days ago. I was doubting a while about to purchase a SurfacePro or a Cintiq Companion Hybrid, but another friend is selling a Cintiq for a really good price so I’m going for that one.
Anyway what I’m saying is that SurfacePro users are happy with the product and also happy using my brushes.
      Too much happiness!
      Thx for your comment.

  7. Agustina says:

Alex, tengo Photshop CS6 + Wacom Intuos pen.
¿Qué pack de pinceles me recomendas comprar? Me vendría de diez tu consejo!
    Gracias!

    • Dukal says:

Hola Agustina.

        Saludos!

  8. Artnok says:

Great job you made here! I’ve been using your brushes for several weeks now. I really feel very confortable with them and make me draw even more naturally on my Cintiq…! Nevertheless, I’d really like to know why you chose to make this pack load as “Predefined Tools” and not usual brushes ? Is there a way to turn them into regular brushes so that we could have a preview of them ? Second point : I agree with that default black color “issue”. I’m really fond of using different outlines color in my drawings. And when switching brushes it’s a bit unproductive setting each time the right color. You told upper that we could manage to custom the presets and save them to new sets. Could you give some tips to achieve this? Thank you very much for this awesome work… N

    • Dukal says:

      Thank you Artnok,
I understand the thing with the black color as default, but as I said in the description

“This pack was created with the idea of emulating some styles used primarily in black and white comic strips, using black ink and washes”

That was the idea at the moment of creating this pack but I agree with you that sometimes this could be annoying so I’m going to modify it with the next update 🙂
In the meantime you could modify that setting by your own:
      1. Select the Tool Preset you want to modify
      2. Click the “Create new tool preset” Icon at the bottom of the Tool Presets Window and give it a similar name
Eg: Select “03. AD Provensen Thin 10px”
      Click “Create New Tool Preset”
and as name write “03. AD Provensen Thin 10px Mod”
Each time you do that just take care to Uncheck the “Include Color” option
The save the whole pack as AD_The_Cartoonist_Brushes_Mod.tpl
and that’s all (Remember that my products are licensed, but this kind of mods for personal use are right)

    • Dukal says:

And why “Tool Presets” and not normal “Brushes”?
it is explained inside the instructive:

“The 90% of my brushes are provided as ‘Tool Presets’, basically because it allows us to include more options and tools to improve quality and workflow.”

In a Tool presets file we can include opacity, flow, mode, color and not restric just to brushes but also other tools like erasers, smudges, mixer brushes, etc.
I guess every PS user agree that the Tool Presets window is really poor in terms of previewing and organization, that’s clear and there’s not too much to do but wait for Adobe listening us and improving the Tool Presets Window.
The next version of my panel AD Artbox will go in that direction but will be just a patch to work with my own packs.

Each time you select a Brush from the Tool Presets Window, you could save it as Normal Brush using the Brushes Window, just click the “Create New Brush” icon and you’re done! 😉
I don’t really recommend it, you will have a nice preview but in most cases you will loose some settings.

Personally, I prefer to organize my tool presets using the “Preset Manager” moving my favorite presets to the top of the list.

      Hope this helps!
